ALL ABOUT EVE

There are plenty of "Eves" in our future. Christmas Eve and New Years Eve both loom largely in the next couple of weeks. But first we need to get past the "Eve of Destruction". Psychos (I mean psychics) worldwide and through the ages have deemed 12/21/2012 as the day of reckoning. But face it, we can't even predict the weather correctly half the time...

For the prompt, write about the night before a big day. What preparations are needed? What is anticipated? Narrow it down even further, write of the moments just before the featured event. And don't worry, if we get past tomorrow, it's not the end of the world!

Final Preparations

For your fiction today, let's assume the world is going to end in just two days.  What final tasks will your character(s) complete other than paying all the bills and taking out the trash.

Breaking Free

This past weekend saw the premiere of The Hobbit:  An Unexpected Journey, complete with a huge red dragon invading and taking up residence in a dwarven stronghold with a horde of gold.  Inspired by the dragon, this week's prompt is to write a bit of Flashy Fiction to describe a scene/story in which a chained dragon escapes.  Why was it chained?  Who had it chained?  How did it break free?  Everybody loves a good dragon tale...what's yours?

Do the opposite...

Normally, you expect to find monkeys holding bananas, right?  Not this time.  As you can see above, the banana has the monkeys.  So here's the thing - write something that is the opposite of everyone's expectations.

And have fun!  (I really mean that - and not the opposite.)

A Little Light Reading

It's the Christmas season, and colored lights shine everywhere. Today, flash us some fiction about light - holiday lights, city lights, the first light bulb, the sun...or someone whose light just refuses to stop shining. Share your piece in the comments here, leave the light on for us, and we'll be over soon.

There was always with him a wonderful purity at once childlike and profoundly stubborn, (wiki commons)."

Maybe write a dialogue with Einstein as a participant...or if you could ask Albert something what would it be...?

THE CUSP OF DECEMBER

As November wanes and we've just one more month to make 2012 memorable,
write a piece of fiction of changes that put you in great position to succeed. I'm not talking apocalyptic happenstances, but a personal change your character makes to improve his prospects for success.

"It is required of every man," the ghost returned, "that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow-men, and travel far and wide; and, if that spirit goes not forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death."

FASTER THAN A LOOK

Today's "OPEN MIC" prompt comes from Mariya Koleva who offers this poem to ponder and render into your Flashy Fiction today. Thanks for your contribution, Mariya!

hatred happens faster than a look”

I’ve heard love at first sight exists.
It’s possible.
Yet, I say, there is hate that comes faster than the look.
You search in vain - don’t look for a reason
No need to recall harmful words, treacherous
looks, or treacherous acts – those are not the reason.
It all happens like it does in Nature: a leaf unfolds, or
a leaf falls. A matter of time.

And because death is quicker than birth,
I say:
hatred happens faster than a look.

© 2012, Mariya Koleva, translation from Bulgarian

***

Use Mariya's poem as your inspiration.
Your character is the victim of hatred,
or worse is the perpetrator of such vitriol.
Does he/she let it destroy them,
or do they become stronger for it.

Abstractly Reacting

(Photobucket: misskitty68)

  • The force that propels the human spirit on the clear way forward and upward is the abstract spirit.

-Wassily Kandinsky  'On the Question of Form', in Blaue Reiter Almanac.

  • Literature is not an abstract science, to which exact definitions can be applied. It is an Art rather, the success of which depends on personal persuasiveness, on the author's skill to give as on ours to receive.

- SirArthurThomas known as  'Q' Quiller-Couch
Inaugural lecture as Professor of English at Cambridge University.

  • Abstract refers to something that is not physical or concrete. (adjective)
An example of abstract is the idea of justice.

Go forth...react abstractly...

as to the lengths you would go for family
(and a steaming turkey drumstick!)
